Professional career is an important progressive process of individual advancement through official stages of professional development. Both men and women are particularly suited to the rapid career development but gender stereotypes impede this process. Based on empirical research, the authors demonstrate that the social status of respondents as an indicator of the high efficiency of their activity and the conformity of activity to self-esteem play an important role while building a career. Respondents have an idea of the professional qualities that help both men and women build a career and relate to different semantic fields. The active position of moving “forward” is important for men during the career enhancement, while remaining in their posts, which is deep in essence but the local in terms of possibilities, is the priority for women. When assessing the qualities that hinder career advancement, the authors identify the gender-specific inconsistencies.
