The research problem and the rationale for its relevance. The first decades of the XXI century defined the state of reading in Russia as a crisis, which poses a threat to education, as the basis of learning is working with text (reading). The ability to read now means a variety of skills to work with text in the printed and digital environment, the reading activity of the person, which is improving throughout his life. Only a qualified teacher can help a schoolchild to master quality reading in the modern digital environment. The teacher needs to master certain reading competences to help a schoolchild learn to read. The goal of the research is to provide theoretical and practical data on the formation of professional competencies of teachers, which are necessary for the development of reading activity of schoolchildren and improve the quality of their own professional reading.
