The origin of patch making

Бесплатный доступ

During the Neolithic Age the earliest technological method of making clay vessels, i. e. patch making, was extremely widespread among various peoples of Eurasia. However, the issue of its origin has not yet been discussed in archaeological literature. The paper presents an original hypothesis relating to the origin of this technique advanced by the author. Namely, it is suggested that this method was derived from traditions of plastering small portions of clay over wickered vessels. This hypothesis relies on extensive ethnographic and quite scarce archaeological data as well as experimental results. The author comes to the conclusion that development of ceramic traditions and basketry traditions follow very close patterns
