The article aims at the study of communication problems in the space of contemporary visual art. The focus is placed on the significance of the artist’s role in the creative process and his relationship with the audience. Consideration is being given to the specifics of communication between the artist and the viewer in the postmodern era. The author examines co-creation of the artist and the viewer as their relationship and the possibility of their communication via the perception of the piece of art by the viewer, where the latter can become the character of the work. The viewer’s perception of a piece of art is seen as a process of transformation of external properties of the object into internal characteristics of the viewer, and art is endowed with the qualities of timelessness. It is pointed out that in the process of artistic communication the artist acts as a creator; an inventor; a screenwriter, and his work may be perceived as symbolic, aesthetic or playful. Thus, a piece of art turns into a revelation, a cultural hypertext. The artist proves to perform the role of a compiler of borrowed ideas, plays with meanings and does not distinguish between elite and mass art. The article also emphasizes that often a contemporary artist acts as the author of an idea, not the author of the piece of art itself, which results in strengthening the importance of the viewer, who is entitled to form the figurative content of the work along with the creator of the painting or sculpture. The possibility of co-creation makes the viewer a co-author of the work and a full-fledged participant in the process of artistic communication. The viewer and the artist together comprehend the meaning of the piece of art and apply this communicated message while forming their own, personal vision of the conception of the world. Picturesque canvases of modern Siberian artists A. G. Pozdeev, A. N. Osipova and Z. B. Dorzhiev are used as the empirical basis for the research.
