The spiritual and artistic bases of the novels «The Celestial Ways» by I.S.Shmelev and «The Cliff» by I.A.Goncharov are directly connected to the author's life concept as the realization of the Divine Providence. The spatial images in the works' title mark the spiritual pivot associated with the characters' sinful delusions and their search for a righteous path. The religious basis of the novels is their conceptual kinship in depicting the personality spiritual growth. The impact of the hagiography on «The Celestial Ways» creates a special artistic world vs. the romantic space of «The Cliff» with its religious ideas expressed in a «basically laical language». Both Shmelev and Goncharov can clearly define the circle of characters who by their spiritual nature unconditionally believe in the Divine Providence. However, Raysky is only on his way to realize things that are a glaring truth for Darin'ka de Shmelev. At the same time, the Goncharov ideal is present in his work as a potency, whereas in Shmelev's works it acquires material forms in the novel's Yutov scenes, where the characters experience amazing metamorphoses.
