In the article the author considers the psychological nature of self-consciousness and its role in the process of adaptation. Self-consciousness is a peculiar, original system of consciousness, identical to the concept of I-concept, consisting to a greater or lesser extent of the individual's perception of himself. The process of self-consciousness is considered as an attitude to one's own thoughts and ideas, personal qualities, an assessment of one's own potential. From this point of view, in the process of adaptation, self-consciousness is the identification of existing qualities that correspond to the situation. Here, the “I-image” and the defense mechanisms of consciousness should become an independent object of analysis. The main point is connected with self-consciousness or "I-concept". It is self-consciousness that is subject to frustration under the influence of external and internal factors, the continuity of which leads to the activation of psychological defense mechanisms. The study of the role of self-consciousness in the process of adaptation is very diverse, although the dynamics of changes in self-consciousness in extreme and difficult situations has not been studied enough. In complex situations, it is theoretically impossible to study each of them separately. The analysis shows that the verbal content of self-consciousness is reflected to a greater extent in the rationalization and projection of psychological mechanisms. In this regard, it is necessary to use different verbal techniques that facilitate the process of adaptation in different extreme conditions.
