Introduction. The late period of L. N. Тolstoy’s work was characterized by his considering the Russian legal reality — the questions of justice, the problem of crime and punishment. As a rule, the theme of crime in Tolstoy’s work is almost always associated with gender relations. Маterials, Results and Discussions. The basis of the drama «The Power of Darkness» is the criminal case against a peasant in the Tula province, Efrem Koloskov. Considering typology of characters only from psychological point of view it is necessary to mention such concept as accentuation of character. Almost all of the characters of Tolstoy’s drama are accentuated personalities. In the story «The Kreutzer Sonata» L. N. Тolstoy ponders over the physical side of love, puts questions and gives distinct answers: as to what the character of man’s desire for woman is, what marriage must look like in the contemporary time of that period. The main character Pozdnyshev belongs to «stuck, paranoid» type of personality, which is mainly characterized by «pathological stability of affect». Conclusions. In his works L. N. Tolstoy, like other Russian writers, educated in official Orthodox faith consistently carries the idea that the causes of crimes committed by his characters are sin, lust, their corrupted consciousness.
