The decline in the level of health of university students in conditions of an extremely limited lifestyle in terms of mobility is one of the most important social problems of our time. One of the ways to solve it is to optimize the educational process by introducing a personality-oriented approach in the process of physical education of students. The article discusses the main mechanisms of the formation of motivation for physical education, in particular, among university students, identified shortcomings in the existing practice of dividing physical activity in accordance with the level of students' health. In the course of the analysis of the available material and practical experience, the psychological and pedagogical foundations of the individualization of the educational process in physical culture classes at universities are presented.
