The ways of optimizing the ways of forming listening skills in students of non-linguistic universities are considered. It is shown that among the innovative methods of practical training in listening, the approach based on learning to understand the listened material using technologies of fragmentation and modeling, as well as taking notes of the information received during listening using the Cornell method stands out for its effectiveness. Implementation of this approach helps to speed up the process of processing foreign-sounding speech, its grammatical, syntactic and semantic analysis. It is shown that teaching students the skills of decoding, fragmentation and pattern recognition, modeling, as well as the skills of writing notes of the information they hear increases their ability to master listening skills, ensuring the formation of their foreign language competence.
