Ways to solve staffing problems by Ivanovo-Voznesensk enterprises in the context of the industrialization in the late 19th - early 20th centuries

The study deals with solving the problems of providing industrial enterprises with the labor force in the context of industrialization. Based on archival funds of Kuvaev’s manufactory and factory inspection of Vladimir province, the author reveals the features of rational management decisions that contributed to the gradual transition from paternalistic traditions to modern ones requiring workers to comply with the internal regulations of the company and general working barracks. Employees negatively perceived the increased control over production and everyday life despite higher earnings. They often refused to keep working in such an enterprise. This situation affected the social composition of the labor force and, in the early 20th century, forced the entrepreneur to recruit workers from distant areas. The materials of the local press and the memories of the workers are an essential complement to the understanding of the situation resulting in a sympathetic assessment of the existing relations.
