Having analysed data of various types (archive materials, published resultsof field investigations, collections of pottery and individual finds), the author singles outa new group of mediaeval antiquities in the Upper Volga basin dating from the third quarterof the 1 st mill. AD. The Podol-type sites include 9 rural settlements and 2 fortified siteslocated on the lakes Seliger, Volgo, and Sabro, as well as on the Volga banks. The sites aresituated in different landscapes and on different soils than those attributed to the cultureof Pskov Long Kurgans. No burial sites have been discovered near the Podol-type sites sofar. They date before the sopka-type burials, but differ from the Udomlya-type antiquitiesin pottery set and history, since the discussed Podol-type sites had not transformed intothe culture of sopka-type burials.
