The purpose of the article is to substantiate the position that an expert’s explanation is a separate type of special research in criminal proceedings. The study was carried out on the basis of an analysis of materials from criminal cases, in particular, interrogations of experts on their conclusions, as well as a study of problematic issues related to the inner conviction of an expert. The methodological basis of the research includes a set of general and special methods of scientific knowledge. Among them are the dialectical method of research, formally-logical and its varieties (analysis, synthesis, comparisons, induction, deduction, etc.), historical and legal, formally-legal, comparative-legal, statistical, functional-structural, etc. A large number of works by forensic scientists and proceduralists such as T.V. Averyanova, R.S. Belkin, P.D.Bilenchuk, A.I. Vinberg, V.E. Konovalov, N. I. Klimenko, A. M. Moiseev, G. M. Nadgorny, Yu. K. Orlov, I. L. Petrukhin, G. V. Prokhorov-Lukin, E. R. Rossinskaya, M. Ya. Segai, S. N. Stakhivsky, V. K.Stringzha, S. A. Sheifer, V. Yu. Shepitko, V. N. Sherstyuk, A. R. Shlyakhov, M. G. Shcherbakovsky, A. A. Eisman and others. At the same time, research questions of such a category as «expert’s inner conviction» remain relevant.
