The article analyzes the approaches of S. Freud and representatives of American social psychology (E. Erikson, G. Tajfal, J. Turner) on the interpretation of the concept of "identity". It is established that identity is defined by them as a set of self-interpretations associated with individual self-esteem, which also has its roots in social structures and ethno-cultural traditions. The elements that make these approaches extremely popular in the study of the problems of civil identity at the present stage of the development of scientific knowledge are emphasized.
Positive and negative identity, social categorization, ingroup, outgroup, socio-cultural environment, ethno-cultural traditions
