The paper provides a comprehensive study of the process of the reception of Roman law in two key codifications of civil law in the 19th century: the French Civil Code of 1804 and the German Civil Code of 1896. The paper conducts a comparative legal analysis of the extent and nature of the borrowing of Roman legal norms, and focuses on the influence of Roman law on the structural features of the legal acts under study. The article examines key aspects of the reception in the areas of legal status of the individual, marriage and family relations, property, obligations, and inheritance law. Attention is paid to the historical context of the creation of codification acts. In conclusion, the article draws a conclusion about the different approaches to the reception of Roman law in the French and German legal traditions.
