In this paper, patriotism is considered as an element of civic identity. The features of the modern stage of development of the Russian state, characterized by the search for the basis for the consolidation of the country's population, actualize the following aspects of the analysis of these phenomena: firstly, through the dichotomy “Fatherland - small homeland”; secondly, by studying the specifics of self-identification of representatives of different generations. The theory of generations by N. Howe and W. Strauss was used as a methodological basis for determining generations. The results of a specific sociological study conducted on a representative sample in the Astrakhan region are described. There are similarities and differences in responses among representatives of different age cohorts. The data from other regional and federal studies are provided to support some of the findings. The main directions of further study of patriotism and civic identity in different Russian generations are noted.
