The article deals with theoretical approaches to the interpretation of the concept “information”, the main differences of the information society from the industrial one, content as one of the challenges of the information society. It offers the creation of a regional information system, that allows managing knowledge as a production factor, which ultimately will contribute to the provision of the competitive advantages of the region.
