The past two decades are marked by a wider spread of the idea of ecosystem approach to population health. This is a new interdisciplinary approach focused on four main interdependent components that affect population health: environment (physical and biotic), socio-economic factors, behavioral aspects (lifestyles), and genetic factors. The ecosystem approach makes it possible to examine the relationship between the strategy for an integrated management of environment and the ecological approach to population health, facilitating improvement of population health through a more rational management of ecosystems. It is well known that the average demographic indicators of population health in Russia are significantly lower than in developed countries. The article examines regional differences in the Russian population mortality depending on the climatic, environmental, socio-economic factors and lifestyles.
