Resumeis a description of a person’s abilities making him competitive in the labor market. Resume should reflect the basic qualities that are required of the candidate; usually they include productivity, education and unlimited abilities. Consequently, resume should be understood as strategic planning of speech, which is carried out by selecting speech techniques allowing achievingthe goals set [1]. Resume is also called CV (Curriculum Vitae), which is literally translated from Latin as “the course of life”.

The purpose ofany resume is to draw attention to the applicant and, as a result, to encourage the employer to invite him to an interview. That is, the most important thing when writing a resume is to follow two principles: focus on positive applicant’s qualities and skills, and avoid concentrating on negative experience.

In different countries requirements to resumes may differ. Besides, in Russia different organizations may have different requirements for writing a resume. Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to check the company’s site if there is a template for writing a resume, so the resume will be higher evaluated [2].

Resume that the employer has reviewed prior to the interview allowslearning the main thing about the applicant quickly, formulating additional questions, that reduces the time and raisesthe effectiveness of the interview followed.

However, when writing a resume, candidates often make mistakes that negatively influence the chance to get the desired job . Some errors are highlighted below.

  • -    Too general information. A lot of applicants make too general resume, so called “resume for all occasions”. If the applicant has not clearly stated his purpose and has not described the specific function, it will be difficult for employers to find the vacancyfor him.

  • -    Lack of necessary information. Many job seekers have misconceptions about the importance of certain skills for the employer, so they do not reflect their key competencies in the resume.

  • -    Grammar and spelling errors. Many resumescontain errors and this is one of the reasons why their authors are not considered as serious contenders.

  • -    False information about oneself and one’s skills soon becomes clear to the employer.

  • -    Wrong choice of words. The impression from the strongest contender can easily be spoiled by jargon, inappropriate phrases or unsuccessful clichés, as well as humor, irony and sarcasm.

  • -    Negative information should be excluded from the resume as it will not attract positive employer’s attention [2].

Thus, based on mistakes made by applicants when writing a resume, a number of recommendations can be made for the successful resume preparation [3]:

  • -    It is better not to use such options as “manager” or “specialist” and similar words of wide meaning, because this wording will not give the employer an idea of what the candidate exactly wants. Employers will not waste their time thinking about what to offer to a job seeker, so if a specific job is not determined by applicant, the resume will not be considered. Also, the applicant must demonstrate to the employer that he really has the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience, because this will help the employer to understand that this candidate is the most suitable for the vacancyrequired.

  • -    It is not necessary to make the resume excessively long (2 pages and more), because it only tires the employer, and if very important information is written at the end of the resume, then the candidate risks that his resume will not be read until the end andhe will not get an invitation to an interview. The resume should fit to one pageor two pages at the most. However, excessive brevity can also have a negative impact, because the employer will not find the information he needs.

  • -    The resume should not have grammatical errors and typos. Such resumes produce an extremely negative impression on the employer. If the applicant’s goal is to demonstrate his high professionalism and attention to detail, he cannot make spelling or grammar mistakes. Therefore, it would be wise to let some philologist check the resume.

  • -    When writing a resume, the candidate needs to be honest. Any employer will quickly understand that a newly-hired employee has no skills or knowledge of some programs that he mentioned in his resume. Therefore, more effective way to attract the employer’s attention is to confirm the information provided by the applicant with the necessary examples and documents.

  • -    When writing a resume it is better to avoid inappropriate expressions, slang words, as well as irony, humor and sarcasm, as the resume is a business document. Only formal and business style isexpected.

  • -    Resume should include only positive information about the applicant. The applicant should not criticize his previous employers and talk about his own failures. However, at the same time it is possible to cite some difficulties that have been successfully overcome.

Thus, the importance of a qualitatively compiled summary cannot be overemphasized. The applicant’s resume is “the speech self-portrait” of a kind [4]. And each of us is interested in creating an impressing portrait document.
