Based on the archival records and documents of the early 1920-s, the article studies the genesis of the Soviet theater from the perspective of the repertoire policy of the Bolsheviks during the revolutionary period. The author considers the figure of A.V. Lunacharsky as not only a Commissar of Education, but also as a playwright. Reviewing the theatrical repertoire, the article shows the role of V.E. Meyerhold as an experimenter and theater innovator. The repertoire is discussed against the background of the increasing control of the authorities.
