The purpose of the article is to consider the reasons and nature of the repressive policy of the state towards Petrograd University. The negative attitude of the university to the establishment of the Soviet power in 1917 left a negative imprint on the nature of the relationship between the university and the Council of People’s Commissars. The situation was complicated by the destructive controversy surrounding the reform of higher education. The leadership of the country viewed the position of the university in reforming higher education as sabotage, which was carried out in the interests of the white movement. In this regard, professors were regarded by the state security agencies as “agents of the bourgeoisie”.
