The article analyzes Randle McMurphy, the character of K. Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, who represents, in the author’s opinion, the cultural archetype of the trickster. The author looks at the character of McMurphy portrayed in the novel and describes his essential features, highly characteristic of him - strife to help people (“good core”), ability to transform, overconfidence, unconsciousness; more or less characteristic - features of a cultural hero, boastfulness, anger, ability to destroy, laziness; somehow characteristic - creative power, inquisitiveness, mediation, silliness. The author gives the examples from the novel to prove her ideas. All in all, McMurphy is more tragic than archaic tricksters, and more dependent on social conditions.
