Retrospective analysis of the epizootic and epidemic situation regarding rabies in the Russian Federation and the Omsk region in 2019-2023

Despite extensive experience in comprehensive study and analysis of epizootic and epidemiological risks of epizootic development, carrying out measures to prevent and combat infection, today rabies remains one of the main problems for veterinary and medical specialists in many countries of the world, including Russia. The article provides a retrospective analysis of the epizootological and epidemiological situations regarding rabies in animals and humans on the territory of the Russian Federation and the Omsk region in the period 2019-2023. and the causes of problems due to rabies in animals. Large epizootics of rabies have been recorded in the Central, Volga, Ural and Siberian federal districts of the Russian Federation; in other regions the epizootic situation is less tense. 22 cases of human rabies have been recorded, including one in the Omsk region, which was fatal. The main sources of human infection have been identified: domestic and wild animals with rabies. A tense epizootic situation regarding animal rabies is being recorded in the Omsk region, and over the past year the number of epizootic foci has increased 6 times (in 18 out of 32 districts of the region). The formation of foci of the natural type of rabies involves wild carnivores, most often foxes, and the urban type - dogs and farm animals. The causes of the problem have been established. A promising area of rabies prevention in the Russian Federation and the Omsk region today is the immunization of animals, especially domestic and wild carnivores
