The paper examines the effect of various techniques for carbon fiber surface preparation on the strength of adhesive bonds, provides requirements for sacrificial layers, reviews various materials for sacrificial layers, provides a comparative estimate of their removal force (peeling-off force), of the presence of carbon filler residue on the sacrificial layer, as well as the presence of sacrificial layer residue on the carbon fiber. It provides results of developmental testing of techniques to prepare carbon fiber surfaces for bonding, analyzes adhesive bond failure behavior and identifies strength properties of adhesive bonds where the bonded specimen surfaces were pre-treated using various techniques.
