The article is devoted to a remarkable monument of Latin necropolistics and epigraphy of the 1st century A. D. - Cenotaph of centurion Marсus Celius, who died in the battle in the Teutoburg forest in 9 A. D. in the North-West of Germany. This historical source includes a relief image of the centurion in all military ammunition, portraits of his freedmen, as well as the epigraphic component. The inscription of the Cenotaph, which represents the epitaph of the deceased, is a slice of the history of the ancient society of the time of the New Testament events and, on closer examination, gives additional ideas about the culture and mentality of the Roman society, which will soon meet the preaching of the first apostles. This monument is still ignored by domestic experts on the history of Antiquity and Latin epigraphy. The article provides a philological analysis of the Cenotaph inscription, as well as a detailed historical commentary
