Introduction. The article studies folk music of Russian Finno-Ugrians in the context of the formation of European ethnomusicology and the contribution of Robert Lach, one of its founders, into the comparative Music Studies. The works of B. Bartok, Z. Koday, I. Kron, K. Sachs, E. Hornbostel and others form the theoretical basis for the paper. Practical significance consists in analyzing the factors that contributed to the inclusion of music of the Finno-Ugric peoples of Russia in the field of comparative analysis. The object of the study is the history of ethno-musical aspect of Finno-Ugric Studies; the subject is the specific features of its formation. The research aims at showing some tendencies in the development of ethno-musical aspect of Finno-Ugriс Studies abroad, the role and significance of Lach’s works for the formation of Finno-Ugric ethnomusicology as a science. Materials and Methods. The material of the study was made up of international and national printed sources. In paper employed the principles of historical analysis and the method of typological continuity. Results and Discussion. The article shows the role and significance of phonogrammarchives for the development of ethnomusicology, the classification systems of European scholars, and the main directions of the formation of ethnomusicology. It considers the work of R. Lach and the theoretical foundations of his works on the music of Finno-Ugrians in the context of the works of his predecessors. Conclusion. It determined the significance of Lach’s works for the subsequent development of the Russian ethno-musical aspect of Finno-Ugric studies.
