The article talks about the role and significance of the works of F. M. Dostoevsky in the study of legal disciplines. Earlier, the author in previous works noted that the works of Russian writers of the XIX century. influenced the humanization of legislation and the vector itself in the penitentiary policy of the Russian state in the direction of mitigating its punitive potential. A very important circumstance for legal scholars is the fact that F. M. Dostoevsky was able in a work of fiction to reveal in great detail the internal stratification of criminals in the Omsk prison, especially the characteristics of persons who committed grave and especially grave crimes. He was one of the first to consider the emerging elements of the convict subculture, which is very important for lawyers- researchers of the criminal environment.
