The article examines the role and importance of indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals in the foreign policy activities of states using the methodology of process tracking. The study contributes to the elimination of gaps in the study of the relationship between the quality of these indicators and strategies of international relations. It is shown that the Millennium Development Goals became the basis for defining the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. It is argued that the latter play a crucial role in the global political process, since they support the development priorities approved by the world community. In many cases, their indicators are developed selectively, in accordance with the foreign policy interests of states. It is noted that ensuring the effectiveness of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is conditioned by the quality of indicators developed to determine the progress of the process, which should be based on reliable data.
