The article reveals the Gnostic view on the mystery of the origin of the state and law from the position of sophicratic management of society, which has reached the level of knowledge that allows organizing society into a complex state and legal system. The author critically evaluates numerous theories explaining the genesis of state institutions from the standpoint of economic, political, sociological, cultural, legal, mythological and other positions. Particular attention is paid to the level of knowledge and its bearers – learned priests (sophicrates), determining the vector of teleological development of mankind from savagery to civilization, from ignorance to enlightenment, from cruelty to humanism, from lawlessness to justice, from lawlessness to law. The processes of progressive development of society can be replaced by involution, leading to barbarization and savagery of society, which has been repeatedly observed in the historical process. As a result, the idea is put forward about the need for a modern state to engage not only in the education of its citizens, but also to support science, thanks to which it is possible to solve the most important problems facing modern civilization: environmental, limited resources, unequal distribution of world income between different countries and peoples, as well as national security and maintaining world law and order.
