The article examines the evolution of China's national policy in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the role of the economic factor in its implementation. The transition from administrative control measures (demographic change, military presence) to economic development since the late 1970s is analyzed. Based on the sources studied, it is concluded that economic development alone is not enough to solve the national issue, as exemplified by the new round of terrorist attacks that began in the Xinjiang Region at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. In addition, the modern approach of the Chinese government to solving the national issue was studied, which is a combination of investments in the economy with increased administrative control, ideological influence and religious control. The result of the work was the conclusion that a balanced policy of control, combined with preferences, has proven effective in reducing the terrorist threat and integrating the region's population into the Chinese nation.
