The paper discusses the role of matrix metalloproteinases in the onset and progression of osteoarthrosis. It has been established that the leading role in the pathogenesis of OA is played by MMP-1, -2, -3, -7, -9, -13. These enzymes are capable of lysing collagens of various types, aggrecan, elastin, laminin, fibronectin and other proteins of the intercellular matrix, which entails the disintegration of the collagen structures of the cartilage. This contributes to a decrease in the strength, elasticity of the joint and the further restriction of mobility in it. In addition, the literature has data on the ability of metalloproteinases to provoke inflammation in the joint, which in turn can contribute to the progression of the disease.
