The relevance of the study is due to the search for new sources of economic development in the context of the systematic introduction of information and communication technologies. The article analyzes the influence of education on the directions and rates of economic development. In the course of the study, an analysis was made of the evolution of ideas about the impact of education on the pace of economic development, which made it possible to identify two main approaches - macroeconomic, based on the theory of human capital, and macroeconomic, using the provisions of neoclassical theories of economic growth. It is concluded that one should distinguish between the degree of impact on the dynamics of the gross product of universal and professional competencies. An analysis of changes in the composition of professional competencies of the active population has shown that continuous education and possession of information and communication competencies increase the level of adaptability of economic agents to changes in the external environment. It is concluded that the differentiation of educational programs on the part of educational organizations and the growing demand for obtaining competencies in the field of high technologies are interrelated processes, the implementation of which ensures a steady growth in the gross product and at the same time ensures an increase in the income of specialists. The result of the study is the thesis about the need to implement the principles of lifelong education, which is an endogenous factor in the progressive macroeconomic dynamics.
