The article deals with the concept and the sources of formation of a palliative care system in modern culture, and the impact this help makes to the public consciousness, first of all - on the inner circle of hopelessly ill patient. The point of view of J. Baudrillard is considered, according to which the situation of replacing the experience of dying and death beyond the limits of the visibility of society and culture is associated with deep fear, caused by the fact of the finiteness of human life. The historical prerequisites for the formation of the institution of palliative care are also considered - the existing traditional rites of the person's transition from life to death, practiced in the countries of Asia and Latin America. These rituals testify to the non-historical significance of the experience of death and dying for preserving social unity. At the present time, professional institutions that carry out similar functions play a significant role in providing the foundations of humanistic ethics.
