The author of the article analyzes the foundations of this success, mostly due to the attractive image of the protagonist, who can be called a gentleman not just by appearance, but also inner beliefs. The hero retains his virtue in the difficult historical circumstances of the post-revolutionary years. The complex and controversial period of the Russian history from the 1920s to the 1950s is shown in the novel without the manifestation of anti-Russian prejudice.
