The article is devoted to the study of the journal “Moscow Observer”. A thinking about the present and the future of Russia, the ways of its development occupied an important place in it. Disputes between Westerners and Slavophiles are incipient there already. This discus partly overlapped with the opposition of the old and new capitals - Moscow and Petersburg. The journal hotly debated issues related to the problems of the philosophy of history and religion, political system of the state, relations between Russia and Europe, assessment the reforms of Peter I, the comprehension of the role of scientific and scientific-technical progress in the development of society. The position of A. S. Khomyakov, S. P. Shevyrev, V. F. Odoevsky, N. F. Pavlov, V. P. Androsov, E. A. Boratynsky is studied in here. The conclusion is that the authors of “Moscow observer's” opinions were varied, it was independent and original character, however, has always been focused on spiritual values. Religious pathos sometimes manifested in the works and articles of “observers” directly, sometimes gets in the subtext, but the belief in the importance of holding and Providence always remains unchanged.
