Russian academic science in the correspondence between N. Ya. Marr and V. V. Bartol’d

The paper provides an overview of the letters exchanged between N. Ya. Marr and V. V. Bartol’d over more than thirty years of their scientific life. Marr’s and Bartol’d’s letters is an important source for reconstructing history of the archaeological investigation of Central Asia and the Caucasus, establishment of research institutes, and relations with state agencies. Marr’s and Bartol’d’s letters also discuss activities aimed at establishing institutions for studying and protecting historical and cultural heritage of Russian peoples, public and political issues and also contain new data for reconstructing biographies of the scholars.
