The article discusses the problem of correlation between modernization and globalization processes assessed ambiguously in the contemporary social science. The author offers its empiric solution on the basis of historical analysis of the Russian reality in the framework of the world-systemic approach as a methodological basis. Comparing the models of pre-revolutionary and Soviet modernization it is concluded that the effectiveness of national modernization is inversely proportional to the degree of openness to global trends. The openness of the Russian society to the global processes leads to the economic deformations, development distortions and partial modernization of export-based, global market-oriented industries mainly. And on the contrary, the closedness makes the modernization to be executed more logically, systematically and effectively.
