The article outlines the main directions for the prospective development of general education in the Russian Federation in the 1970s, the development of which received predominantly negative assessments in a number of historical and pedagogical works published at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The features of the practical implementation of state decisions adopted in the second half of the 1960s to the early 1970s aimed at the development of general education are considered. Based on documents from the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR, the organizational difficulties arising in the process of implementing state policies aimed at the development of the general education system and strengthening the professional orientation of schoolchildren are demonstrated. Examples are provided of major projects for the renewal and development of general education, practical implementation of the principles of its compulsory nature and universality, equalization of the level and quality of general education throughout the territory of the Russian Federation while preserving the fundamental principles of the Soviet school as the leading condition for its further development.
