This article is devoted to the analysis of the formation of the “practical” direction of Russian theological scholarship. Russian theological scholarship has passed a serious path in its historical development. The modern result of a developed theological educational system has its roots in the distant past, thanks to the analysis of which a modern researcher can come to a number of serious conclusions, as well as a number of important historical reconstructions. The purpose of this article is to analyze the historical development and formation of the practical profile in the higher theological pre-revolutionary school. A set of historical methods was used as the methodological basis of the study: historical-genetic and retrospective. In the course of the article, the author comes to a conclusion of the gradual development of the practical direction, starting with the reforms of the higher theological school in 1869.
