Over the centuries that have passed since the Byzantine conquest by the Turks, Mount Athos continued to live as a monastic republic in its Byzantine traditions. Until now, Athos is a living, spiritual Byzantium. At the beginning of the 20th century, the spirit of time also touched this holy place, introducing disorder, confusion and unrest there. The First World War and the revolutionary events in Russia in 1917 also affected the life of the numerous Russian monasticism on Athos.
