Inland water transport: A potential for development of Serbia

This paper presents an attempt to draw attention on unused important resource of Serbia in inland water transport. After defining the terms and explaining the importance of transport in general, a detailed explanation of the advantages of inland water transport and its role in economy are given. Current situation and legislative regulations in the Republic of Serbia are in the center of interest. Over the past years, even decades, no serious attempts haven't been made to use inland navigable rivers, as the most important part in inland transport. An important moment is Master Plan for Development of Transport on the Danube, proposed by the European Reconstruction Agency, which has partially already been implemented. In the second part of the work, a critical review of legal regulations on shipping on the Danube and Sava is given.
