В тот же день АП член училищного совета нагло улыбнулся: «О вас доходят неодобрительные отзывы … советую принять меры». ЛМ забыла или ничего не могла. Из училищного совета слухов не было.

В сентябре АП едва держалась на ногах. Ученики поняли, что виноватая ничего им сделать не смеет. Беспорядки, шум, гвалт: «С при-плодцем!». Положение день ото дня всё невыносимее.

В ноябре темные, безлунные ночи. Сердце АП до того переполнилось гнетущей тоской, что не могла сдержать себя. Пошла к мельничной плотинке. Речка бурлила и пенилась; шёл сильный дождь; колесо стучало, пустынно, мрачно, безрассветно. Дошла до середины мостков и бросилась головой вперед на понырный мост.

Жизнь её порвалась, почти не начавшись, бессмысленно, незаслуженно и жестоко.

Только церковь утешит в жизненных треволнениях (напутствие попа нахлебнице АП). Однако место бога в душе АП пустует. Возможно, забыв Магдалину, полагает себя нечистой, чтобы взывать к нему (в беде и окопе – все верующие).
