Based on the texts of the medical speciality "Otorhinolaryngology", the article analyzes the features of the functioning of explanatory complex sentences, conditioned by the specifics of the communicative and functional orientation of the scientific (medical) text. The focus of the work is the presentation of the classification of explanatory complex sentences in the light of the systemic description of the means of semantic actualization of this type of sentences.
