In his review of the book, A.P.Lobodanova reveals the advantages of the new approach to semiotics as the science concerning the symbolic nature of art, expressed in the historical and ontological aspect. The book focuses on the sign nature of art not as separated phenomenon but through the history of art and its creators, and in connection with them. It provides a complex description of the basic concepts, terminology and categories of semiotics as a theoretical and empirical knowledge. In addition, it gives the properties, structure and types of signs, analyses the semiotic systems, outlines common historical features of the development of semiotics as the humanity. The scope of this kind of research is rather broad, as its subject and the object lie within philosophy of art, semiotics, art history, theory of arts and history simultaneously. As a result, there is a complex view, that meets the requirements of the modern, integration-friendly humanity.
