The article examines the history of Sengiley, currently the smallest city in the Ulyanovsk region in terms of population. The history of a city is the history of changes in its landscape, multiple status changes, the impact of the urbanization process of the early twentieth century, and the experience of overcoming the crisis of the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The historical heritage of small towns and settlements in Russia plays an important role in preserving the country's cultural memory. These cities and settlements are currently not as noticeable in the media news agendas against the backdrop of capital and regional centers and are not always known to the average Russian, but they keep a rich history that tells about the lives of people, about the vicissitudes that our country has experienced. Through architecture, traditions, changing statuses and landscapes, these settlements show how global processes affect life on the ground. The diversity of local stories creates a holistic view of Russia, of which the Ulyanovsk Region is an integral part. The article provides a historical overview of the main events in the city of Sengiley from 1666 to the present period. The material was prepared within the framework of the network project "Cities and settlements of the Ulyanovsk region".
