The northern sea route: problems of strategic development and prospects for international use

The problems of navigation development on the Northern Sea Route have been a focus of researchers around the world for many years. However, the scientists have placed emphasis on the increased international use of the Northern Sea Route only in the last few decades. The study discusses the strategic development of the Northern Sea Route and identifies the possibilities of integrating the route into the world transport system. The research reveals the key problems impeding the development of international navigation on the track. The political and legal review of the issue is presented as well. One of the key points is the fact that the water area of the Northern Sea Route is not enshrined in international treaties, although it is used in international publications and national instruments, which, in turn, raises the issue of securitization as a response to a set of restrictions on addressing the security problems in the region. The research postulates that the development of the Northern Sea Route is one of the strategic objectives of Russia today.
