The text corpora by Yu. Dombrovsky, devoted to W.Shakespeare or inspired by his images, are regarded in the context of the tragic destine of the Soviet writer. The core of the research is almost not profoundly studied nouvelle “Lady Macbeth” and the functions of Shakespeare’s allusions revealed in it. It is deducted that Yu. Dombrovsky’s interest to W.Shakespeare is based neither on the feeling of special cultural likeness (as in Turgenev’s case), nor on the acute feeling of the alien. The writer interprets his own life in the context of W.Shakespeare’s works, the life as withstand lack of freedom, inevitable loss in this battle in real life and final getting freedom in creation. The English playwright for Yu.Dombrovsky is eternal, overcoming the traditional life/art opposition.
