The Shiite oppositional clergy and the protest movement in Iran

After the presidential election of 2009, the situation in Iran has deteriorated. The participants of the protests have become major supporters of the losing reformist candidates participating in the presidential election campaign. This political mobilization has been called «Green Movement». Its main requirement is to revise the results of the voting. Protest actions had a significant support from a number of Shiite religious authorities, indicating a split in the Shiite religious elite.
