Similarities and differences of the phonetic types of words in the British and American variants of the English language (on the material of the American national corpus and the British national corpus)

The model of speech perception put forward by St. Petersburg linguistic school states that speech perception is based on the perception of essential linguistic features. Linguistic features are understood as factors that influence speech perception. They describe linguistic phenomena on different language levels: sounds, words, sentences and texts and have quantitative and qualitative characteristics. The set of essential linguistic features can be identified in experiments and lie in the basis of the phonetic types of words. Phonetic types are understood as groups of words united by one or another essential linguistic feature. The aim of the present research is to identify similarities and differences of phonetic types of English words from the frequency strata of the American National Corpus and British National Corpus.
