The article substantiates the conclusion that the use of firearms by police officers and private security guards is qualified as a measure of their possible behavior aimed at fulfilling the requirements of the law on the suppression of socially dangerous acts that threaten the life and health of people, various types of property. The article argues for the possibility of using firearms in the process of law enforcement and private security activities in the context of solving priority state tasks at the present stage of social development. At the same time, despite the fact that the suppression of socially dangerous acts is the common goal of the use of firearms by police officers and private security guards, the mechanism of its use has similarities, differences and problems. A multi-level classification of criteria for the ratio of the use of firearms by these persons is being developed, in which the first level bases are: the nature of the method of legal regulation of the actions being studied, the elements of the legal relationship that develops in the process of committing the actions under consideration, the types of weapons used, the nature of the means of legal regulation of relations that develop in the field of study, prohibitions in the field of the use of weapons. A brief description of the first two bases of classification is given by detailing them in order to identify the studied similarities and differences.
