In this article one of the means of depicting “scottishness” in modern American novel “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon, published in 1991, is represented. The plot of the novel “Outlander” is rich and diverse in its appeal to mythology, which is an integral part of the Scottish identity. As one of the means of depicting “scottishness” are myths and legends in plot in D. Gabaldon’s novel “Outlander”. The images of Scottish legends are mythological creatures that inhabit rivers and lakes (Loch Ness, Loch Garve), and also Scottish spirits of stones (Craigh-na-Dun) and forests (fairies). Myths and legends are closely connected with the ordinary life of the Scots, and because of this magical and unforgettable atmosphere of the XVIII century is created.
